The History of Hallelujah Acres Cafe
Rev. George and Rhonda Malkmus, co-founders of Hallelujah Acres, opened their original Hallelujah Acres Restaurant and health food store on February 12, 1992 in Rogersville, Tennessee, a rural town of less than 5,000 people. The store front was only 11 feet wide, and the restaurant contained 16 seats. Rhonda prepared the food and George waited tables.
As the popularity of the café and the health message Rev. Malkmus was proclaiming began to spread, that small store front could soon no longer contain all the people wanting to enjoy the great food and attend Rev. Malkmus’ lectures. In 1993 they moved to a 56-seat facility and by February 1994 the ministry part was growing so rapidly that they closed the restaurant to concentrate on spreading God’s health message.
After moving to Hallelujah Acres’ present location in Shelby, North Carolina in 1997, the café was reborn a few years later as an organic salad bar and enjoyed a growing popularity until a fire in the building forced the café to close in May 2009.
After the fire, the cafe was totally refurbished and Executive Chef Kirk E. Talley, who had previously been a chef for two well-known country clubs, joined Hallelujah Acres. Together, we set out to prove that vegan fare is more than mere rabbit food. In fact, our creative, culinary delights will leave your palate impressed at a reasonable price.
Join us in spreading the word that living food can be both delicious and nutritious, and that the Hallelujah Acres Café is the place to eat – not just for vegetarians!
